Youth is a photographic series by Bangkok-based artist Chardchakaj Waikawee (b. 1980), developed through years of photographing and spending time with young people living on the margins of Bangkok’s streets.

Taking its title from the Thai phrase wai run, Youth looks beyond age as a fixed category. For Chardchakaj, youth is a spirit, an instinct, and a way of surviving the world: restless, vulnerable, raw, and constantly in motion.

The series brings together analogue, hand-printed photographs taken between 2008 and 2020. Through portraits of individuals often rendered invisible by circumstance, social displacement, and economic position, Chardchakaj reflects on identity, resilience, and the human ability to adapt within a city shaped by rapid urbanisation, global consumer culture, and enduring spiritual traditions.

Working with old cameras, expired film, and analogue darkroom processes, Chardchakaj embraces imperfection as part of the work’s language. Dust, grain, scratches, and uneven surfaces are not removed, but left visible. These traces become part of the image itself, echoing the rawness of the lives, environments, and encounters from which the work emerged.

Youth is not only a record of people living on the edge of the city. It is Chardchakaj’s meditation on survival, visibility, and the fragile dignity of being alive.

Youth คือผลงานภาพถ่ายโดยศิลปินชาวกรุงเทพฯ ชาติฉกาจ ไวกวี (เกิด พ.ศ. 2523) ซึ่งพัฒนาขึ้นจากการใช้เวลาถ่ายภาพและคลุกคลีอยู่กับกลุ่มวัยรุ่นที่ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ริมขอบของเมืองกรุงเทพฯ เป็นเวลาหลายปี

ชื่อผลงาน Youth มาจากคำว่า “วัยรุ่น” ในภาษาไทย แต่ในงานของชาติฉกาจ คำนี้ไม่ได้หมายถึงช่วงอายุเพียงอย่างเดียว หากแต่หมายถึงสภาวะบางอย่างของชีวิต เป็นทั้งจิตวิญญาณ สัญชาตญาณ และวิธีการเอาตัวรอดในโลกที่ไม่เคยหยุดนิ่ง เปราะบาง ดิบ กระสับกระส่าย และเคลื่อนไหวอยู่ตลอดเวลา

ผลงานชุดนี้รวบรวมภาพถ่ายอนาล็อกที่ถ่ายระหว่างปี 2008 ถึง 2020 และถูกอัดด้วยมือผ่านกระบวนการดั้งเดิม ภาพบุคคลในชุดนี้เผยให้เห็นผู้คนที่มักถูกทำให้ไร้ตัวตนในสายตาของสังคม ด้วยเงื่อนไขของชีวิต การถูกผลักออกจากพื้นที่ทางสังคม และสถานะทางเศรษฐกิจ ชาติฉกาจใช้ภาพถ่ายเพื่อสำรวจเรื่องตัวตน ความสามารถในการยืนหยัด และศักยภาพของมนุษย์ในการปรับตัว ท่ามกลางเมืองที่ถูกหล่อหลอมด้วยความเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็ว วัฒนธรรมบริโภคนิยมระดับโลก และรากของความเชื่อทางจิตวิญญาณที่ยังคงฝังอยู่ในชีวิตประจำวัน

ด้วยการทำงานผ่านกล้องเก่า ฟิล์มหมดอายุ และกระบวนการล้างอัดภาพในห้องมืด ชาติฉกาจเลือกเก็บร่องรอยของความไม่สมบูรณ์เอาไว้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของภาษาภาพ ฝุ่น เกรน รอยขีดข่วน และพื้นผิวที่ไม่เรียบร้อยไม่ได้ถูกลบออก แต่ถูกปล่อยให้ปรากฏอยู่บนภาพ ร่องรอยเหล่านี้กลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของตัวงาน สะท้อนความดิบของชีวิต สภาพแวดล้อม และการพบเจอที่เป็นต้นทางของภาพถ่ายชุดนี้

Youth จึงไม่ใช่เพียงการบันทึกภาพของผู้คนที่ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ริมขอบของเมือง แต่เป็นการใคร่ครวญของชาติฉกาจต่อการเอาตัวรอด การมีตัวตนให้ถูกมองเห็น และศักดิ์ศรีอันเปราะบางของการมีชีวิตอยู่
